I have deliberately made it a practice to transact mobile money business with a certain lady on the road to my office. I’m particular about the business I do with her because I admire her resilience. She’s physically challenged. In an environment like ours she could have taken the easiest route for people like her – beg on the streets.
So for taking that important step, I want to contribute to the success of her business by always going there to transact business, even if it costs me a little more in terms of transportation and convenience. I believe if we all became ethically minded in our business dealings we could achieve two purposes: we will succeed in communicating that hard work pays; and also, isolate businesses that do not follow ethical standards.
For big businesses (mining, oil/gas, telecom, IT, hospitality, etc) it makes sense to source materials locally. You will end up returning part of your income to the communities, which will boost the local economy, reduce unemployment and poverty. The business environment will be more productive and ultimately the goals of sustainability will be attained.
So today, when you see that plantain seller with a baby strapped to her back in the hot sun, at least buy from her. When you see that boy with an amputated arm selling phone cards and “PK” in traffic please buy from him. Similarly when you see that kenkey seller who beats up the poor girls who work for her and doesn’t also pay them well, avoid buying from her. You can contribute to make this country better by taking these measures, than only talking. Blessed day!
